Part II

Ok. I Know. I Know. I have been really bad about writing. I have just been very busy and way too excited. So. What have I been up to the last few days? A lot!!!!!!!! First, the volcano has been popping off like crazy. We are seeing, hearing and feeling eruptions all day long. When you look at the volcano you can see the shock wave travel through the plume, then you can see bombs flying through the air and you know where they land because you can see the steam rising off of the bombs. That...

Hello all,
Well, the storm has passed and it is a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky. I wanted to briefly let you know that I have a helicopter flight within the hour and that I will be out of contact for two days. We are flying up the Fang glacieer where we have our high altitude base camp where we have to aclimate for two days. After that it is a short skadoo up to the hut. Wish me luck, I am finally off to see my mountain.

Hello Everyone,
I am still working on the next part to my story but I figued you could use some pictures to get you by. The first is a black and white shot of a Scott tent with Erebus in the background and the second is of me in front of Erebus. These were taken two days ago while we were at happy camper school - I will tell you all what that is later. In the mean time, Enjoy!

Camping in the Shadow of Erebus Part I

Hello Everyone,
We were scheduled to fly out to Fang base camp today but the weather turned bad so all flights in and out were grounded, both Helicopter and C-130. We are hoping to catch a flight tomorrow. So I have spent the day doing work in the lab. Unfortunately I haven't had much of a chance to update my journal. The following is the first part of my story. I am trying to get you all caught up on what I am doing. I am about to go do dinner now and I will try to finish my work up...

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am safely in Christchurch, NZ. I have to get up at 5am tomorrow morning to catch my flight down to Mac town (McMurdo). Anyway, all is well and when I get some time either at McMurdo or on Erebus I will start writing more details of my trip so far. Lots of love to everyone.

Earthquake: Magnitude 2.4 Socorro, NM 10/29/05

I know this isn't an expedition related entry but I am thinking about expanding this to include regular everyday entries. We'll see how it goes. So, to get to the point:

I was laying on my sofa saturday night when my apartment started to shake. It seemed like a different shaking from the normal EMERTC explosions. First of all, the shaking was definately more intense and it lasted longer than any explosion I had previously felt. Imagine sitting on a boat that is going up and down with...

All Good Things Must Come To an End…For Now.

As much as I don’t want to think about it this was the last day here in Iceland. The day started out slow because we had to drive all the way back to the southern part of the Island. The cool part is we got to travel through the centre highlands because the road was just opened for the summer. The road is closed during the winter because it is a dirt road and not well traveled and can get very dangerous. When we started to get towards the centre we encountered an interesting problem. The...

There Be Whales Here...

Iceland Day 9 - Now that I have had some sleep I am feeling much better. Today was a great day. We started by climbing up fossil beds near Tjornes. The interesting part about this area is that the fossils were found to be from an environment that much warmer than it is today. They also dated some of the fossils and found that they dated to before the last ice age. So to sum up, the water level was higher and the water was much warmer than it is now. Now for the fun part, we went whale...

Tired…

This is day 8 here in Iceland and I am extremely tired. After being out till 4am and getting up at 7am I am a wee bit tired. Today we started by going to a greenhouse across the street from our hostel. Our friend from Holland, that we met the night before, offered to give us a tour of his greenhouses. They grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and flowers and hold 12% of the market for the tomatoes in Iceland. The houses are all geothermaly heated. In one of the houses they have to keep the...

What Surprises May Come…

Well this is day 7 and when it started I thought it would be a boring day of driving, boy was I wrong. We started our long trek out of the Fjords and into the Icelandic desert. The desert was awesome because it was very different from the deserts back home. They have absolutely no vegetation, well very little; there are some small weed things. Anyway, all around the desert are high snow capped peaks. It was very strange. After the desert I passed out in the back seat. I was sound asleep...

Ski-doo’ing The Glacier

Today is day number six here in Iceland and for me it was the best day yet. Today we traveled to the Glacier and rode Ski-doo’s. Mom, I know what I want for my birthday *Wink. For those of you who don’t know what Ski-doo’s are let me explain. Ski-doo’s are snowmobiles or as they like to say here, snow scooters. Essentially they are snow motorcycles with two front ski’s and a single tread in the back. They were the coolest thing I have ever ridden. It was like motorcycling over a huge open...

On the Edge Of Insanity…

There are some things that normal people don’t do. Ideas that turn into actions on this trip sometimes don’t completely make it through the logic process. Keep that in your mind and I will get back to it.

Today was a day of long driving. That doesn’t mean we didn’t have any fun. First thing in the morning we were to meet a man that would take us to Mt. Hekla. The weather had improved from the day before and it was fairly clear. Unfortunately after breakfast it started to rain again, but...

A Stroll on the Beach…

This is day four here in Iceland and it is a very rainy and foggy day. We stayed at these cute four person lodges right by the river in a town called Hella. I have extremely good news to tell you all. I got my bag this morning. It turns out the airport brought it last night but the people that owned the place didn’t tell anyone. Anyway it doesn’t matter because I have my bag. I am so excited to have all of my stuff back. Well we headed out on the road to find a beach. As it so happens we got...

Rainy Day 3

Day number three has come and is almost gone. It is 5.49pm here and 11.49 there. We spent the day in the rain. Well, let me start from the beginning. Last night I didn’t sleep very well. I kept thinking about my lost luggage. It is one thing to loose your luggage for a day, but when two and then three day roll around it starts to wear on you. I am a very independent person; I am usually the one lending a helping hand. It is very rare that I have to rely on other people, especially for...

Day Number 2

After a night of sleep I feel much better. I realized that I was in a fog the day before. I don’t remember a lot of the day. Extreme Jet Lag! Good food, good sleep and I am ready to rock and roll.

I got up this morning and had breakfast. I wrote mom and dad a quick email to let them know I was ok. I can’t seem to get my calling card to work from the hostel so I haven’t had a chance to talk to them. I will have to speak through my words, for now. Well, first things first. I went to...

Day Number 1 You will never believe this story!

It is now 6.47pm (Iceland Time), 12.48pm your time and I am beginning to write this entry while I am waiting for the spaghetti to finish. I am sitting here…

You are gonna laugh. I started this last night and I wound up falling asleep so I have to start all over again, so here goes.

It is now 9.33pm (Iceland Time), 3.33pm your time. This is the second day, June 5, 2005.
So let me start out by telling the story that I left off since yesterday. The last you read I was still in JFK,...

1st Class Forever !

I am absolutely amazed at what I have been missing all these years by not riding first class. For starters I fit great in the seats. They are nice and wide and my knees don’t even come close to touching the seat in front of me. Believe me, this is only the beginning. Once on the airplane they ask if you would like a pre-flight drink. You have to drink these somewhat quickly as they have to be finished before the plane takes off. Then we take off. Once we are on our way to our...

At The Airport

Well Everyone,
I am at the airport now. I got through security and I am waiting to board my plane. My laptop battery is running low (need a new battery) so this is going to be a quick post. Mom and Dad just dropped me off after we had breakfast in the terminal and I am now ready to begin my adventure. More to come...when I have power...C-Ya...

*Update* I just checked my flight tracker widget and my flight is 11 minutes late. Isn't the internet Amazing.
